Music Events:

  • 1939 - Pianist Albert Ammons records "Shout for Joy 1939"

  • 1943 - Frank Sinatra appears at The Paramount causing a mob scene of hysterical bobby-soxers to flood Times Square and blocking midtown New York City traffic for hours

  • 1955 - RCA victor announces a marketing plan called "Operation TNT." The label drops the list price on LP's from $5.95 to $3.98, EP's from $4.95 to $2.98, 45 EP's from $1.58 to $1.49 and 45's from $1.16 to $.89. Other record labels follow RCA's lead and begin to drop prices as well.

  • 1962 - The Beatles and Brian Poole and the Tremeloes both audition at Decca Records, a company which has the option of signing one group only. The Beatles are rejected, mainly as they come from Liverpool and the others are Dagenham-based nearer London

  • 1963 - The Beatles start a 5 day tour in Scotland to support the release of their new single, "Love Me Do".

  • 1964 - Top of the Pops premieres on BBC television.

  • 1977 - The Clash headline the gala opening of the London music club, The Roxy

  • 1979 - Bill Graham closes San Francisco's Winterland Theater following a New Year's Eve performance by the Blues Brothers and the Grateful Dead

  • 1980 - Cliff Richard is appointed an MBE by Queen Elizabeth II. The only other pop music acts to be created MBEs are the Beatles and Elton John

  • 2000 - At exactly midinight EST in New York City, Prince plays his classic song 1999 to celebrate the new century, and then vows to never play it again.
