Music Events:

  • 1904 - Puccini's Madame Butterfly debuts in Milan to no great success.

  • 1930 - Trumpeter Henry "Red" Allen records You Might Get Better, But You’ll Never Get Well

  • 1955 - Ruby Braff and Ellis Larkins record their first duo album

  • 1960 - The Everly Brothers sign a 10-year, $1 million contract with Warner Bros. Records.

  • 1967 - "Strawberry Fields Forever / Penny Lane" is released in the U.K.

  • 1969 - Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan record together in Nashville, Tennessee. Only one song, "Girl from the North Country", would be released from these sessions.

  • 1970 - Joni Mitchell announces that she is retiring from live performances, following her show at London's Royal Albert Hall. She would be back performing concerts within a year.

  • 1981 - Billy Idol leaves the band Generation X to begin a solo career

  • 1988 - A 12-year old Mötley Crüe fan in Florida is badly burned while trying to imitate a stunt in the band's "Live Wire" music video. The boy suffered burns over ten percent of his body. Mötley Crüe issued a statement saying the band's stunts should not be tried at home.

  • 1990 - Aerosmith appears in the Saturday Night Live sketch Wayne's World, where they perform the Wayne's World theme song.

  • 2001 - Manic Street Preachers become the first western rock band to play in Cuba. (Fidel Castro was in attendance.)

  • 2004 - Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan posts a bitter message on his personal blog calling D'Arcy Wretzky a "mean spirited drug addict" and blaming James Iha for the breakup of that band.
